Introduction
Panopto is Virginia Tech’s chosen video content management system and video creation tool that allows users to create, share, and manage video content easily.
Panopto is integrated into Virginia Tech’s Canvas platform, allowing instructors to record, upload, and share videos directly within Canvas. Panopto also provides tools for organizing videos, tracking engagement, and enabling students to review content.

Instructions
Submitting Video Assignments
Instructors may allow one or multiple submission types for Canvas video assignments. Depending on what options they enabled for your assignment, you may need to submit your video using the following submission types: Text, Upload, or Media. Instructions for each submission types are outlined below.
Text Submissions
This option assumes that:
- Your instructor is allowing Text submissions.
- You will use the Panopto Video LTI to upload an existing video file or record a new video.
- Open the Canvas assignment.
- Under Choose a submission type, click Text to pull up the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE).
- Click on the Apps (plug) icon, then View All.
- From the list, click on Panopto Video.
- Upload or record a video:
- Click Upload to upload a video file from your computer.
- Click Record to create a video using Panopto software.
- Once the video is ready, click Insert to embed the video into the editor.
- Add any additional text if required.
- Click Submit Assignment.
- Confirm that your submission was successful.

Upload Submissions
Panopto is not required to submit your assignment.
This option assumes that:
- Your instructor is allowing Upload submissions.
- You created a video using another tool (e.g. Zoom or your computer’s recording software).
- Open the Canvas assignment.
- Under Choose a submission type, click Upload.
- Choose a file to upload or drag the video file from your computer to upload it.
- When the video is finished uploading, click Submit Assignment.
- Confirm that your submission was successful.
Media Submissions
Panopto is not required to submit your assignment. The Canvas uploader or recorder is used instead.
This option assumes that:
- Your instructor is allowing Media submissions.
- You will record or upload directly within Canvas.
- Open the Canvas assignment.
- Under Choose a submission type, click Media.
- Record media or upload media:
- Click Record Media to record a video using the Canvas recorder.
- Click Upload Media to choose a video file from your computer to upload.
- When the video is ready, click Submit Assignment.
- Confirm that your submission was successful.
Other Graded Assignments
Grade on % Viewed Assignments
Instructors can assign a video for you to watch. When you watch the video, you’ll be graded based on how much of the video you watched.
- Launch the Canvas assignment.
- Watch the video.
- Canvas will record your grade automatically - there is no submit button for this type of assignment.
Keep in mind:
- Grades may take up to 3 hours to populate in the gradebook after you watch the video.
- Do not close the assignment too early so that your progress can sync.
- Your grade is assigned based on the percentage of the video you watched.
- If you scrub ahead, your percentage watched will be lower.
- If your instructor allows multiple attempts, you can pause and come back to the video later, or rewatch if you’re not satisfied with your initial score.
Grade on Quiz Results Assignments
Instructors can embed quiz questions in a video. When you watch the video and answer the quiz questions, the quiz score will be recorded in the Canvas gradebook.
- Launch the Canvas assignment.
- Watch the video.
- At certain points in the video, the video will pause and quiz questions will be displayed.
- Answer all questions.
- Click Finish.
- If your instructor inserted questions at multiple points in the video, repeat steps 2-5 until all quiz questions have been answered.
- Your score will be recorded in the Canvas Gradebook.

Keep in mind:
- Panopto retains your most recent score, not your best score.
- Your instructor may disable scrubbing forward on the video.
- Your instructor may disable multiple attempts on the quiz.
