Introduction
Panopto is Virginia Tech’s chosen video content management system and video creation tool that allows users to create, share, and manage video content easily.
Panopto is integrated into Virginia Tech’s Canvas platform, allowing instructors to record, upload, and share videos directly within Canvas. Panopto also provides tools for organizing videos, tracking engagement, and enabling students to review content.

Instructions
Installing Panopto Recorder Software
Panopto has a desktop application, Panopto Recorder, where you can record locally/offline, then transfer the recording to your Panopto account.
- Go to https://virginiatech.hosted.panopto.com and log in. Alternatively, you can:
- Log into Canvas with your Virginia Tech PID and PID passphrase.
- Click on a Canvas site.
- On the Course Navigation Menu, click Panopto Video to view and manage your videos.
- If Panopto is not enabled in your menu, see How do I manage Course Navigation links?
- Click on the + Create button.
- Dpending on your operating system, click on Panopto for Windows or Panopto for Mac.
- Click Download Panopto to download the installer.
- Locate and launch the downloaded file and follow the prompts for installation.
- If you do not have administrator access on your device and your device meets the minimum requirements, then please discuss with your departmental IT about whether they can install the application for you.
- Once installed, sign in to use the application.

Recording Options
Recording with Panopto Recorder
This section assumes you’ve installed Panopto’s Recorder for your operating system. Videos can be created by clicking on the + Create button on the Panopto home page, then clicking Panopto for Windows or Panopto for Mac. To learn more about using Panopto software to record your video, see:
Recording in Browser
Panopto Capture is Panopto's tool for recording videos in a browser without the need to locally download/install software. Videos can be created by clicking on the + Create button on the Panopto home page, then clicking Panopto Capture to launch the in-browser recorder. Follow the prompts from your browser/computer to enable your camera, microphones, and screen/audio sharing settings before recording.

Webcasts
Panopto Webcast allows you to broadcast your recordings live to an audience. Panopto Recorder will be used to record and start the webcast. To invite people to watch, share the webcast URL or embed the webcast to any webpage to allow viewers to access the live recording. Webcasts can also be created in advance and shared with the audience.

As of Panopto for Mac version 15.0, webcasting is no longer supported. Use Panopto for Windows for webcasting, or contact Panopto Support to downgrade Panopto Recorder on your macOS device, then follow the instructions below:
