Granting Extra Time/Attempts on Classic Quizzes
To grant students extra time or attempts:
- Create and publish a single quiz for the entire class. You don't need to make two versions!
- See the Canvas Quiz Guides
- Go to the quiz and click Moderate This Quiz.
- The Moderate Quiz page shows what students submitted, their score, and how long they took on the quiz. If you do not see the Moderate this Quiz option, please ensure your quiz is published as it will not display until you publish your quiz.
- Attempt - the number of times the student submitted (not started!) the quiz.
- Time - how long the student spent on the quiz.
- Score - the portion of the score that Canvas automatically calculates.
- Arrows/pencils - give the student another attempt.
- The Moderate Quiz page shows what students submitted, their score, and how long they took on the quiz. If you do not see the Moderate this Quiz option, please ensure your quiz is published as it will not display until you publish your quiz.
- Find the student you want to give extra time or submission to and click the pencil next to their name.
- On the Student Extensions window:
- Give the student a number of extra attempts. Check Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt if the quiz end date has passed.
- Give the student extra time for every attempt.
- Click Save. If the quiz is only available for a short amount of time, such as the length of one class period, complete the steps under Accommodating for Short Quizzing Periods.

With New Quizzes, you only need to grant a student additional time once. These settings will be applied to all course assessments for the student.
- In the Quizzes tool, click on the name of the quiz in question.
- Scroll down and click the Build button.
- Click Moderate at the top of the screen.
- Granting accommodations:
- To grant accommodations for all assessments the student will take in your site:

- In the system tray popup for the student, add Additional Attempts or Time adjustments. Click Apply to save your changes.
- Click the pencil icon at the end of the row of the student's name.
- To grant accommodations for all assessments the student will take in your site:
- Time and/or attempt accommodations are now granted to that student. If the quiz is only available for a short amount of time, such as the length of one class period, complete the steps under Accommodating for Short Quizzing Periods.
Accommodating for Short Quizzing Periods
If you plan to make your quiz available for a short time period, such as the length of one class period, you'll need to make sure students with extra time or attempts have enough time to complete the quiz.
- Make sure you've set up the students' accommodations first:
- Click on Quizzes in the course navigation menu, locate your quiz, then click on the three dots on the right and click Assign To.
- A tray on the right will open. Click the +Add button. A new entry will appear to add the student.
- In the new entry, in the Assign to field, add the student.
- If multiple students have the same accommodation, you can add them in bulk.
- To find the student, use the dropdown option or start typing the student's name.
- The "Assign to" in the first entry will change from Everyone to Everyone else.
- Enter the dates into Due Date, Available from, and Until fields as necessary to grant the student additional time.
- For example, if the quiz is available for everyone from 8am to 9am and is due at 9am, a quiz for a student who's being granted extra time will need to have a later due date and until date.
- For example, if the quiz is available for everyone from 8am to 9am and is due at 9am, a quiz for a student who's being granted extra time will need to have a later due date and until date.
- Complete steps 3-5 for each additional student.
- When finished, click the Save button in the bottom right corner.
