Installing Mathematica for Faculty and Staff


Introduction

Mathematica is made available at no additional cost to faculty and staff. Access to specific downloads may be found at Network Software.

Installing Mathematica

  1. Access Network Software and login using your VT Username (PID) and password. Click Mathematica Software to expand the menu and scroll down and click Mathematica 12.3.1 MAC download for faculty and staff.
  2. After reviewing the license agreements, click the download link on the next page and save the downloaded file to your desktop. **Do not click Open when downloading the file.**
  3. Double-click the downloaded file and when the setup window appears, drag the Mathematica icon to the Applications icon to install.

    Activating Mathematica

  4. The first time you launch Mathematica you will be required to activate.  Click Sign In under "Activate through your organization (SSO)" to start activation.  This will open a browser window that will allow you to log in to Mathematica.

  5. Once the browser window opens, enter your VT email address in the field and click Continue.

  6. Now, sign in with your Virginia Tech PID and password, followed by two factor authentication. 
    NOTE: If you already have a Wolfram account with your Virginia Tech email address, you'll be asked to link the account. Simply enter your Wolfram account password to link the accounts.
  7. Once you have passed through two factor authentication, you'll need to accept the licensing terms.  When you see the message below, you can close your browser and start using Mathematica.Sign in successful message

Installing Mathematica

  1. Access Network Software and login using your VT Username (PID) and password. Click Mathematica Software to expand the menu and scroll down and click Mathematica 12.3.1 Windows download for faculty and staff.
  2. After reviewing the license agreements, click the download link on the next page and save the file to your desktop. Do not choose Open when downloading the file; save the file to your desktop.
  3. Navigate to the location on your hard drive where the downloaded file was saved. Right-click the downloaded file and click Extract all....

  4. Make sure Show extracted files when complete is checked and when extraction is complete a new window will pop up showing the extracted files.
  5. Double-click setup.exe to begin the installation.

  6. When the setup window appears, click Next.
  7. Leave the default installation location and click Next.
  8. On the Select Components screen, ensure Install all components (recommended) is selected and click Next.

  9. On the Start Menu Folder window, click Next.
  10. On the Ready to Install window, click Install to begin the installation.
  11. When the installation is complete, click Finish to launch Mathematica.
