Connecting Departmental Smart TVs, Streaming Players, & Media Devices to VirginiaTech Wireless

Introduction

Organizations, such as departments, often require wireless connectivity for devices that are:

  • shared (e.g., tablets, test equipment),
  • located in public areas (e.g., monitors, streaming devices), or
  • not attributed to an individual VT Username (e.g., Internet of Things, thermostats, sensors).

Through the Wireless Device service, these devices may be registered to the organization instead of a VT Username.

This service is available at any location with Network Infrastructure & Services (NI&S) wireless service. Organizations and departments may subscribe to the Wireless Device Registration service to register devices to the organization. Registered devices must use the VirginiaTech wireless network.

Subscribing to the Service

To subscribe a department to the service, ask your Communication Liaison to submit an interdepartmental communications request (ICR).

The cost of each organization’s subscription to the Wireless Device service is based on the number of devices the organization requests to register. The cost is $4 per device per month and a one-time $20 fee to set-up the service. There is no fee for subsequent changes to the device quantity. The service is requested through a non-standard ICR, that includes the Customer Account Number (CAN) and the quantity of devices that the organization is requesting to register with the service.

NI&S understands that there may be occasions when additional devices, beyond the number requested on the ICR, may need to be registered. NI&S has established tiers (in the table below) that are based on the number of paid devices. “Additional Allowance” is the number of additional devices that may be registered, when needed, for limited periods of time during a month.  An ICR is not required for these temporary additional devices.

An ICR is required to make permanent changes in the number of registered devices.

  1. Go to the NI&S Wireless Device Registration portal.
  2. In the Username: text box, type your VT Username.
  3. In the Password: text box, type your VT Username passphrase.
  4. Click Log in.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete 2-factor authentication.
  6. Under the maroon Virginia Tech banner, if you see REGISTRATION OF ADDITIONAL WIRELESS DEVICES: PERSONAL, to the right of that, click Go To Wireless Devices: Organizational.
  7. In the DEVICE NAME: text box, type a name by which you can easily recognize the device.
  8. Optionally, in the DEVICE TYPE (OPTIONAL): text box, you may type the manufacturer or other words to describe the device.
  9. In the MAC ADDRESS: text box, type the MAC address of your device.
    • You can type colons, spaces, or dashes to separate the characters.
    • The MAC address will be a 12-character string containing numbers from 0-9 and letters between "A" through "F".
    • Example: 1A:2B:3C:4D:5E:6F
    • The MAC address may be printed on a sticker attached to the device or on the box in which the device came.
    • Due to the number and variety of devices, Virginia Tech cannot help you find the MAC address.
    • For help finding the MAC address, contact the manufacturer of the device, or search Google.
  10. Optionally, in the DESCRIPTION (OPTIONAL) text box, you may type words to help you differentiate this device from other devices you register.
  11. After reading the Acceptable Use Policy agreement, place a check in the check box.
  12. Click REGISTER DEVICE.
  13. If you get an error that says: "Organizational limit reached", the limit of devices that can be registered to the organization has been reached. To fix this, remove one device by following the instructions at Remove, Delete, or Unregister Device.  If you need to increase your organization's device limit, contact your network liaison.
  14. If you get an error that says: "The Wireless device you are attempting to register is already registered for another service. Please confirm the MAC address is correct or contact 4help to investigate this issue," verify that you typed the correct MAC address, and try again. If the problem persists, contact 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
  15. To connect, on the device, in the network settings, connect to the VirginiaTech network. Your device should connect and have Internet access.
  16. If you are unable to connect, try this:
    1. Turn off the device.
    2. Wait a few minutes.
    3. Turn on the device.
    4. On the device, in the network settings, connect to the VirginiaTech network.

Virginia Tech cannot guarantee that a successfully registered device will connect to the VirginiaTech network.
