Introduction

This article describes the options that are available for creating Microsoft 365 Groups.

Explanation

In terms of collaboration and project management, Microsoft Teams is recommended instead of groups due to its versatility and reliability.

When creating a Microsoft 365 Group, there are several available options:

• Distribution Groups
• Security Groups
• Mail-Enabled Security Groups

Both types of groups provide the members access to, but are not limited to, the following resources:

• Group mailbox
• Group calendar
• Group file share
• Group OneNote
• Group Planner view

Private vs Public Groups

• Private groups are exclusive to members only and the owner(s) of the groups must invite new members to participate
• Public groups are open to all Virginia Tech affiliates/anyone in your organization

You may invite members external from the university to participate in private or public groups. However, if they do not have Microsoft 365, they will have limited access to group features.
