Connecting Personal Smart TVs, Streaming Players, & Media Devices to VirginiaTech Wireless


Introduction

This service is available at any location with Network Infrastructure & Services (NI&S) wireless service. Students, faculty, and staff subscribed to the wireless access service are entitled to register up to five devices. To connect Wi-Fi devices with no browser capability, you must already be subscribed to the university's wireless network service. Registered devices must use the VirginiaTech wireless network.

Instructions

Registering / Adding / Connecting a New Device

  1. You can only register and connect a maximum of five (5) devices for this service; however, you may connect an unlimited number of capable devices to the eduroam wireless network.
  2. Verify that you are registered for Virginia Tech wireless service by following the instructions at Registering Online for eduroam Wireless LAN Service.
  3. Go to the NI&S Wireless Device Registration portal.
  4. In the Username: text box, type your VT Username.
  5. In the Password: text box, type your VT Username passphrase.
  6. Click Log in.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete 2-factor authentication.
  8. Click Register Device.
  9. In the MAC Address: text box, type the MAC address of your device.
    • You can type colons, spaces, or dashes between the characters.
    • The MAC address will be a 12-character string containing numbers from 0-9 and letters between "A" through "F".
    • Example: 1A:2B:3C:4D:5E:6F
    • The MAC address may be printed on a sticker attached to the device or on the box in which the device came.
    • Due to the number and variety of devices, Virginia Tech cannot help you find the MAC address.
    • For help finding the MAC address, contact the manufacturer of the device, or search Google.
  10. In the Device Name: text box, type a name by which you can easily recognize the device.
    (If you only see a list of your devices, you already have three devices registered. To be able to add an additional device you must remove one device by following the instructions at Remove, Delete, or Unregister Device.)
  11. In the TYPE: dropdown box, choose a category to help you identify the device.
  12. Optionally, in the DESCRIPTION (OPTIONAL) text box, type words to help you differentiate this device from other devices you register.
  13. After reading the Acceptable Use Policy agreement, place a check in the check box.
  14. Click REGISTER DEVICE.
  15. If you get an error message that says: "The Wireless device you are attempting to register is already registered for another service. Please confirm the MAC address is correct or contact 4help to investigate this issue.", verify that you typed the correct MAC address, and try again. If the problem persists, contact 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
  16. On the device, in the network settings, connect to the VirginiaTech network. Your device should connect and have Internet access.
  17. If you are unable to connect, try this:
    1. Turn off the device.
    2. Wait a few minutes.
    3. Turn on the device.
    4. On the device, in the network settings, connect to the VirginiaTech network.

Virginia Tech cannot guarantee that a successfully registered device will connect to the VirginiaTech network.

Remove, Delete, or Unregister Personal Device

  1. Go to the NI&S Wireless Device Registration portal.
  2. In the Username: text box, type your VT Username.
  3. In the Password: text box, type your VT Username passphrase.
  4. Click Log in.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete 2-factor authentication.
  6. Under MY REGISTERED DEVICES, to the right of the device you want to remove, click the trash can.
  7. To confirm, click UNREGISTER.

Wireless Printers

Wireless printers are not allowed on any Virginia Tech wireless network to ensure quality performance of the network.

To connect a printer to your computer, use a USB cable.
