Configuring the Address Book in a Client to Search the Virginia Tech Online Directory

This article describes how to configure the address book in an email client program to search the Virginia Tech online directory.

Instructions

Outlook for Mac OS

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. From the Tools drop-down list, select Accounts....

    Select Accounts.
  3. In the left menu column, select your account.
  4. Click the Advanced... button.

    Click the Advanced... button.

  5. Under Directory service, in the Server: text box, type: gc.w2k.vt.edu.
  6. Under Directory service, place a check in the Use SSL to connect (recommended) check box.
  7. Under Directory service, place a check in the Log in with my Exchange account credentials check box.
  8. Click OK.

    Click OK.

Outlook for Windows

  1. Log on to Windows with an account that has computer administrator privileges.
  2. Start Outlook.
  3. Select the File tab.

    Select the File tab.

  4. Click the Account Settings button.

    Click the Account Settings button.

  5. From the drop-down list, select Account Settings.....

    Select Account Settings...

  6. Select the Address Books tab.
  7. Click the New... button.

    Select the Address Books tab and click the New... button.

  8. Select the Internet Directory Service (LDAP) radio button.
  9. Click the Next button.

    Select the Internet Directory Service (LDAP) radio button and click the Next button.

  10. In the Server Name: text box, type: directory.vt.edu.
  11. Click the More Settings... button.

    Click the More Settings... button.

  12. If prompted to restart Outlook to save the settings, click OK.

    Click OK.

  13. In the Microsoft LDAP Directory window that pops up, select the Connection tab.
  14. In the Display Name text box, type the name you want for the LDAP address book.

    Select the Conneciton tab.

  15. Select the Search tab.
  16. Under Server Settings, in the text boxes, type the server settings that you want.
  17. Under Search Base, select the Custom: radio button.
  18. In the Custom: text box, type ou=people,dc=vt,dc=edu.
  19. Click OK.

    Click OK.

  20. Click the Next button.

    Click the Next button.

  21. Click the Finish button.

    Click the Finish button.

  22. Click the Close button.

    Click the Close button.

  23. Restart Outlook.
