Conditions for Use of eduroam at Locations Other than Your Home Institution

By joining the eduroam service as a user you shall be deemed to accept these conditions of use:

  1. When using the eduroam service, you shall always comply with local laws and institutional policies that regulate the use of the service.
  2. You shall not use the eduroam service for any unlawful purpose and not (attempt to) breach or circumvent any administrative or security controls.
  3. You shall respect intellectual property and confidentiality agreements.
  4. You shall protect your access credentials (e.g. private keys or passwords).
  5. Use of the eduroam service is at your own risk. There is no guarantee that the service will be available at any time or that it will suit any purpose.
  6. Logged information is used for administrative, operational, accounting, monitoring and security purposes only. The logged information may be disclosed under lawful order to law enforcement or other entities.
  7. The access-granting bodies and Resource Providers are entitled to regulate, suspend or terminate your access, within their domain of authority, and you shall immediately comply with their instructions.
  8. You are liable for the consequences of you violating any of these conditions of use.

Virginia Tech Faculty, Staff, and Students

Windows

  1. Verify that you are registered by following the instructions at Registering Online for Wireless LAN Service.
  2. Near the lower-right of your screen, to the right of the time, in the notification area, click network.
  3. Click eduroam.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. In the User name text box, type your Virginia Tech email address including @vt.edu.
  6. In the Password text box, type your network password.
    (This is different from your VT Username (PID) passphrase.)
  7. Click OK.
  8. If asked to accept a certificate, follow the prompts to accept or install the certificate.

Mac OS

  1. Verify that you are registered by following the instructions at Registering Online for Wireless LAN Service.
  2. From the Apple drop-down, click System Preferences.... or System Settings... depending on Mac OS version
  3. For MacOS 14 (Sonoma) and later:
    1. In the left menu column, click Wi-Fi.
    2. Move the mouse cursor over eduroam, click on the Connect button that appears.
  4. for MacOS prior to version 14:
    1. Click Network.
    2. In the left menu column, click Wi-Fi.
    3. In the right pane, in the Network Name: drop-down, click eduroam.
  5. In the Username: text box, type your Virginia Tech email address including @vt.edu.
  6. In the Password: text box, type your network password.
    (This is different from your VT Username (PID) passphrase.)
  7. Click OK or Join.
  8. If asked to accept a certificate, follow the prompts to accept or install the certificate.

Android

  1. Verify that you are registered by following the instructions at Registering Online for Wireless LAN Service.
  2. Swipe down and tap Settings, which is represented by a gear icon.
  3. Tap Connections.
  4. From the menu, tap Wi-Fi.
  5. Tap eduroam.
  6. If it is not already selected, from the EAP method drop-down, tap PEAP.
  7. From the Phase 2 authentication drop-down, tap MSCHAPv2.
  8. From the CA certificate drop-down, tap Use system certificates.
  9. In the Domain text box, type: vt.edu.

  10. You may have to scroll down to see more text boxes.
  11. In the Identity text box, type your Virginia Tech email address including @vt.edu.
    (If an extra space character was added at the end by autocorrect, delete the extra space.)
  12. Clear the Anonymous identity text box so that it is empty.
  13. In the Password text box, type your network password.
    (This is different from your VT Username (PID) passphrase.)
  14. Tap Connect.

iOS (iPhone / iPad)

  1. Verify that you are registered by following the instructions at Registering Online for Wireless LAN Service.
  2. On the home screen, tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap eduroam.
  5. In the Username text box, type your Virginia Tech email address including @vt.edu.
    (If an extra space character was added at the end by autocorrect, delete the extra space.)
  6. In the Password text box, type your network password.
    (This is different from your VT Username (PID) passphrase.)
  7. Tap Join.
  8. If asked to accept a certificate, follow the prompts to accept / install the certificate.

At Participating Institutions away from Campus

When away from campus, to connect to the eduroam wireless network at a participating institution:

  1. Before you travel, connect to the eduroam wireless network while on the Virginia Tech campus. This verifies that your computer or mobile device is configured properly.
  2. At the participating institution, when you turn on your device, it will automatically connect to eduroam if available.

Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students needing assistance connecting to eduroam at another institution should contact 4Help by clicking Get Help at http://4help.vt.edu. Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students should not rely on any other university or institution for support with eduroam at another institution. Visited institutions are not prepared to support visitors.

Visitors

The eduroam wireless network is provided to visitors from other participating institutions at your own risk and with no guarantee that the service will be available at any time or that it will suit any purpose. You are bound to your home institutions acceptable use policy.

If your home institution participates with eduroam, contact your home institution for instructions, configuration settings, and support.
