Mac OS

  1. In order to request a Spectrum Protect account submit a Service Request in the NI&S Customer Portal. 
  2. Log on to the computer with an account that has administrator privileges.
  3. Download and install Spectrum Protect.
    1. Download the installer file from the IBM Spectrum Protect Client 8.1.13 Downloads and READMEs page.
    2. Save the installer file to your computer.
    3. When the download is complete, to start the installer, in Finder, double-click the icon of the file you just downloaded.
    4. Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.pkg.
    5. Click Continue.
    6. Click Continue.
    7. Click Install.
    8. In the authentication window:
      1. In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
      2. In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
      3. Click Install Software.
    9. When the installation is complete, click Close.
    10. If prompted to move the installer to the trash, click Keep.
  4. Start Spectrum Protect.
    1. In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
    2. Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    3. Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
    4. Click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    5. Click OK.
    6. In the authentication window:
      1. In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
      2. In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
      3. Click OK.
      4. If prompted to accept incoming network connections, click Allow.
  5. Configure the preferences. It is only necessary to configure the preferences when installing the application on a new computer.
    1. In the TSM Client Configuration Wizard window, click Next.
    2. Click Create a new options file.
    3. Click Next.
    4. In the Node Name text box, type the node name assigned to you.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click TCP/IP.
    7. Click Next.
    8. In the Server Address text box, type: yacht.cc.vt.edu.
    9. Verify that the Port Number text box contains 1500.
    10. Click Next.
    11. In the Server Stanza text box, type: adsm.
    12. Click Next.
    13. To accept the recommended exclusions, click Next.
    14. Click Next.
    15. Click Apply.
    16. If prompted to accept incoming network connections, click Allow.
    17. In the window that appears:
      1. In the Password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
      2. Click Login.
    18. When available, click Finish.
  6. Set backup preferences.
    1. Near the top of the window, click Edit.
    2. Click Client Preferences.
    3. In the left menu pane, click Backup.
    4. From the Backup Type drop-down, verify that Incremental is selected.
  7. Set the number of days to keep error logs.
    1. In the left menu pane, click General.
    2. Under the Error Log heading,  check Prune old entries.
    3. Under Prune entries older than, from the drop-down, click 15.
    4. Click Apply.
    5. When prompted about the changes, click OK.
  8. Set the number of days to keep schedule logs.
    1. In the left menu pane, click Scheduler.
    2. Under the Schedule Log heading, check Prune old entries.
    3. Under Prune entries older than, from the drop-down, click 15.
    4. Click Apply.
    5. When prompted about the changes, click OK.
  9. Change the authorization preferences.
    1. In the left menu pane, click Authorization.
    2. Under Password Access, click Password Generate.
    3. Click Apply.
    4. When prompted about the changes, click OK.
  10. Change the Web Client preferences.
    1. In the left menu pane, click Web Client.
    2. Under Managed Services Options, click Schedule.
    3. Click Apply.
    4. When prompted about the changes, click OK.
    5. In the Preferences Editor window, click OK.
    6. In the top menu bar, from the Tivoli Storage Manager drop-down, click Quit Tivoli Storage Manager.
  11. Prevent TextEdit and other applications from changing the text.
    1. From the Apple drop-down, click System Preferences....
    2. In the second row, click Keyboard.
    3. Click Text.
    4. Clear the Use smart quotes and dashes check box.
    5. Close the Keyboard window.
  12. View the exclusion file in Google Drive.
    1. In your Web browser, go to the TSM_startup_files Web page.
    2. If prompted, log on with your VT Username and passphrase and complete 2-factor authentication.
    3. You will see your own Google Drive files. Go to the TSM_startup_files Web page, again.
    4. Double-click exclude-for-Mac.txt.
  13. Copy all of the text in the exclusion file.
    1. Highlight all of the text.
    2. In your browser, from the Edit drop-down, click Copy.
  14. Open the existing Spectrum Protect system settings file in TextEdit.
    1. In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Computer.
    2. Double-click the icon of your hard drive.
    3. Double-click Library.
    4. Double-click Preferences.
    5. Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    6. Right-click dsm.sys.
    7. Click Open With.
    8. Click Other....
    9. Click TextEdit. You may have to scroll down to see it.
    10. Click Open.
  15. Replace the exclusions in the system settings file with the text copied from the Google Drive file.
    1. Very carefully highlight only the lines of text that start with EXCLUDE.
    2. From the Edit drop-down, click Paste.
  16. Save the file with the same name and format it currently has.
    1. From the File drop-down, click Save.
    2. From the TextEdit drop-down, click Quit TextEdit.
  17. Start TSM Tools.
    1. In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
    2. Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    3. Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
    4. When the TSM Tools for Administrators window appears, click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    5. Click OK.
    6. In the authentication window:
      1. In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
      2. In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrative account.
      3. Click OK. A splash screen will appear and then disappear.
    7. If prompted to log on:
      1. In the Password: text box, type your assigned password.
      2. Click Login.
  18. Change your assigned password.
    1. Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
    2. Click Change Password....
    3. In the Current password: text box, type your assigned password.
    4. In the New password: text box, type the new password you wish to use.
    5. In the Verify password: text box, re-type the new password.
    6. Click Change.
    7. Click OK.
  19. Run a manual backup.
    1. In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, under Backup, click Backup.
    2. In the left pane, place a check in Local.
    3. Click Backup. The initial backup may take some time to complete.
    4. When the backup is finished, click OK.
    5. Close the Backup Report window.
    6. Near the top of the window, click File.
    7. Click Exit. The backup process will now run in the background, and the server will initiate the backup when necessary.
  20. If, on the dock, the Spectrum Protect icon flashes:
    1. In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
    2. Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
    3. Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
    4. From the list, click Start the Client Acceptor Daemon.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Click OK.
    7. In the authentication window:
      1. In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
      2. In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
      3. Click OK.
    8. Click OK.

Windows and Windows Server

If you install or upgrade to the latest client when newer versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Software Update 1 are already installed, the installation will fail with "The installation of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 SU1 Redistributable Package (x64) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation?" or "The installation of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 SU1 Redistributable Package (x86) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation? " error message. Click the Yes button to continue and the installation will finish successfully. This error will be fixed in a later version.

  1. If you are behind a firewall, port 1500 must be opened in the firewall for the backup client to work. You must add the server's IP address (198.82.161.186) to your list of trusted IP addresses.
  2. In order to request an account, an ICR must first be submitted by your communication liaison. After an ICR is submitted, your account will be created.
  3. Log on to your computer with an account that holds computer administrator privileges.
  4. In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, if it exists, delete the Download\TSMClient folder.
  5. Install the client.
    1. Download the installer file from the IBM Spectrum Protect Client 8.1.13 Downloads and READMEs page.
    2. Save the installer file to your computer.
    3. When the download is complete, double-click the installer file that you just downloaded. A command prompt window will open and automatically close.
    4. Once the command prompt window closes, in the window that is still open, double-click the TSMClient folder.
    5. Double-click spinstall.
    6. If prompted by a user account control window, click Yes.
    7. To use the installer in English, click OK.
    8. If prompted to install additional items:
      1. Click the Install button.
      2. Follow all prompts to install the required software. You may be prompted multiple times to install software and to restart your computer.
    9. Click Next.
    10. To have the program installed to the default location, click Next.
    11. Click Typical.
    12. Click Next.
    13. Click Install.
    14. If prompted by a user account control window, click Yes.
    15. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
  6. Restart your computer.
    • If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
    • If you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart your computer.
  7. Download the dsm file.
    1. Go to the dsm.opt Web page.
    2. If prompted log on with your VT Username and passphrase and complete 2-factor authentication.
    3. If you see a list of files in your Drive, go to the dsm.opt Web page, again.
    4. Under No preview available, click Download.
    5. If prompted, choose to save the file to your computer.
  8. Open the dsm.opt file in Notepad.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Type: notepad.
    3. As you type, results will appear and change. Click Notepad.
    4. From the File drop-down, click Open....
    5. To view all files, from the Text Documents (*.txt) drop-down, click All Files.
    6. Click the dsm.opt file you saved earlier.
    7. Click Open.
  9. Edit the dsm.opt file.
    1. At the top of the file (line 1), after NODENAME, replace xxxx.vt.edu with the nodename assigned to you.
      Example: NODENAME domain.vt.edu
    2. On line 3, replace canoe.cc.vt.edu with yacht.cc.vt.edu
  10. Save and close the file.
    1. From the File drop-down, click Save.
    2. Close all windows.
  11. Move the dsm.opt file to the appropriate location.
    1. In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, navigate to the ABC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient folder where ABC is the letter of the drive where TSM was installed.
    2. To move the dsm.opt file to the baclient folder, drag dsm.opt to the baclient folder window.
    3. When prompted to provide administrator permission, click Continue.
  12. Start Backup-Archive GUI.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Type: backup.
    3. As you type, results will appear and change. Click Backup-Archive GUI.
  13. Confirm running the program.
    1. In the user account control window, click Yes.
    2. If prompted to unblock:
      1. Place a check in Private networks, such as my home or work network.
      2. Click Allow access.
  14. In the Password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
  15. Click Login.
  16. Change your password.
    1. Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
    2. Click Change Password....
    3. In the Current password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
    4. In the New password: text box, type a new password.
    5. In the Verify password: text box, re-type the new password.
    6. Click Change.
    7. Click OK.
  17. Perform a test of the backup process.
    1. Under Backup, click Backup.
    2. In the left pane, double-click Local.
    3. In the left pane, under Local, navigate to a folder containing a small file to use as a test of the backup process.
    4. In the right pane, place a check in the check box corresponding to the small file. Do not place a check in any hard drive check box(es), because you are only testing the connection.
    5. Click Backup.
    6. When the backup is complete, click OK.
    7. Close the Backup Report window.
  18. Configure the backup scheduler. This step is only necessary if you have never installed Spectrum Protect on the computer before.
    1. Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
    2. Click Setup Wizard.
    3. Place a check in Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click Install a new or additional scheduler.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Place a check in Use the Client Acceptor daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler.
    9. Click Next.
    10. In the Acceptor name text box, type: TSM Client Acceptor Daemon.
    11. Click Next.
    12. To accept the default file name, click Next.
    13. To accept the default port, click Next.
    14. In the TSM Password text box, type your password.
    15. Click Next.
    16. If not already selected, click The System account.
    17. Click Automatically when Windows boots.
    18. Click Next.
    19. To accept the default log file locations, click Next.
    20. Click Yes.
    21. Click Next.
    22. Click Apply.
    23. Click Finish.
  19. Check the schedule log to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
    1. In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, navigate to the ABC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient where ABC is the letter of the drive where Spectrum Protect was installed.
    2. Double-click dsmsched.log.
    3. Look at the text to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
    4. Close the log file window. Installation is complete. Backup will run at the scheduled time between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
    5. If you have to turn your machine off overnight, notify the Spectrum Protect admins by contacting 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
  20. Notify the Spectrum Protect admins of the DNS name of the computer and the name of the computer's owner by contacting 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
  21. Set up open file support to back up locked files (such as archived PST files).
    1. In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, click Utilities.
    2. Click Setup Wizard.
    3. Place a check in Help me configure Open File Support.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click Volume Shadowcopy Services (VSS).
    7. Click Next.
    8. Click Apply.
    9. Click Finish.
    10. In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, click File.
    11. Click Exit.
    12. Restart your computer.
