Mac OS
- In order to request a Spectrum Protect account submit a Service Request in the NI&S Customer Portal.
- Log on to the computer with an account that has administrator privileges.
- Download and install Spectrum Protect.
- Download the installer file from the IBM Spectrum Protect Client 8.1.13 Downloads and READMEs page.
- Save the installer file to your computer.
- When the download is complete, to start the installer, in Finder, double-click the icon of the file you just downloaded.
- Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.pkg.
- Click Continue.
- Click Continue.
- Click Install.
- In the authentication window:
- In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
- In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
- Click Install Software.
- When the installation is complete, click Close.
- If prompted to move the installer to the trash, click Keep.
- Start Spectrum Protect.
- In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
- Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
- Click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Click OK.
- In the authentication window:
- In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
- In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
- Click OK.
- If prompted to accept incoming network connections, click Allow.
- Configure the preferences. It is only necessary to configure the preferences when installing the application on a new computer.
- In the TSM Client Configuration Wizard window, click Next.
- Click Create a new options file.
- Click Next.
- In the Node Name text box, type the node name assigned to you.
- Click Next.
- Click TCP/IP.
- Click Next.
- In the Server Address text box, type: yacht.cc.vt.edu.
- Verify that the Port Number text box contains 1500.
- Click Next.
- In the Server Stanza text box, type: adsm.
- Click Next.
- To accept the recommended exclusions, click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Apply.
- If prompted to accept incoming network connections, click Allow.
- In the window that appears:
- In the Password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
- Click Login.
- When available, click Finish.
- Set backup preferences.
- Near the top of the window, click Edit.
- Click Client Preferences.
- In the left menu pane, click Backup.
- From the Backup Type drop-down, verify that Incremental is selected.
- Set the number of days to keep error logs.
- In the left menu pane, click General.
- Under the Error Log heading, check Prune old entries.
- Under Prune entries older than, from the drop-down, click 15.
- Click Apply.
- When prompted about the changes, click OK.
- Set the number of days to keep schedule logs.
- In the left menu pane, click Scheduler.
- Under the Schedule Log heading, check Prune old entries.
- Under Prune entries older than, from the drop-down, click 15.
- Click Apply.
- When prompted about the changes, click OK.
- Change the authorization preferences.
- In the left menu pane, click Authorization.
- Under Password Access, click Password Generate.
- Click Apply.
- When prompted about the changes, click OK.
- Change the Web Client preferences.
- In the left menu pane, click Web Client.
- Under Managed Services Options, click Schedule.
- Click Apply.
- When prompted about the changes, click OK.
- In the Preferences Editor window, click OK.
- In the top menu bar, from the Tivoli Storage Manager drop-down, click Quit Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Prevent TextEdit and other applications from changing the text.
- From the Apple drop-down, click System Preferences....
- In the second row, click Keyboard.
- Click Text.
- Clear the Use smart quotes and dashes check box.
- Close the Keyboard window.
- View the exclusion file in Google Drive.
- In your Web browser, go to the TSM_startup_files Web page.
- If prompted, log on with your VT Username and passphrase and complete 2-factor authentication.
- You will see your own Google Drive files. Go to the TSM_startup_files Web page, again.
- Double-click exclude-for-Mac.txt.
- Copy all of the text in the exclusion file.
- Highlight all of the text.
- In your browser, from the Edit drop-down, click Copy.
- Open the existing Spectrum Protect system settings file in TextEdit.
- In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Computer.
- Double-click the icon of your hard drive.
- Double-click Library.
- Double-click Preferences.
- Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Right-click dsm.sys.
- Click Open With.
- Click Other....
- Click TextEdit. You may have to scroll down to see it.
- Click Open.
- Replace the exclusions in the system settings file with the text copied from the Google Drive file.
- Very carefully highlight only the lines of text that start with EXCLUDE.
- From the Edit drop-down, click Paste.
- Save the file with the same name and format it currently has.
- From the File drop-down, click Save.
- From the TextEdit drop-down, click Quit TextEdit.
- Start TSM Tools.
- In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
- Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
- When the TSM Tools for Administrators window appears, click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Click OK.
- In the authentication window:
- In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
- In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrative account.
- Click OK. A splash screen will appear and then disappear.
- If prompted to log on:
- In the Password: text box, type your assigned password.
- Click Login.
- Change your assigned password.
- Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
- Click Change Password....
- In the Current password: text box, type your assigned password.
- In the New password: text box, type the new password you wish to use.
- In the Verify password: text box, re-type the new password.
- Click Change.
- Click OK.
- Run a manual backup.
- In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, under Backup, click Backup.
- In the left pane, place a check in Local.
- Click Backup. The initial backup may take some time to complete.
- When the backup is finished, click OK.
- Close the Backup Report window.
- Near the top of the window, click File.
- Click Exit. The backup process will now run in the background, and the server will initiate the backup when necessary.
- If, on the dock, the Spectrum Protect icon flashes:
- In Finder, from the Go drop-down, click Applications.
- Double-click Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Double-click TSM Tools for Administrators.
- From the list, click Start the Client Acceptor Daemon.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- In the authentication window:
- In the Username: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
- In the Password: text box, type the password of the administrator account.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.

Windows and Windows Server
If you install or upgrade to the latest client when newer versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Software Update 1 are already installed, the installation will fail with "The installation of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 SU1 Redistributable Package (x64) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation?" or "The installation of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 SU1 Redistributable Package (x86) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation? " error message. Click the Yes button to continue and the installation will finish successfully. This error will be fixed in a later version.
- If you are behind a firewall, port 1500 must be opened in the firewall for the backup client to work. You must add the server's IP address (198.82.161.186) to your list of trusted IP addresses.
- In order to request an account, an ICR must first be submitted by your communication liaison. After an ICR is submitted, your account will be created.
- Log on to your computer with an account that holds computer administrator privileges.
- In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, if it exists, delete the Download\TSMClient folder.
- Install the client.
- Download the installer file from the IBM Spectrum Protect Client 8.1.13 Downloads and READMEs page.
- Save the installer file to your computer.
- When the download is complete, double-click the installer file that you just downloaded. A command prompt window will open and automatically close.
- Once the command prompt window closes, in the window that is still open, double-click the TSMClient folder.
- Double-click spinstall.
- If prompted by a user account control window, click Yes.
- To use the installer in English, click OK.
- If prompted to install additional items:
- Click the Install button.
- Follow all prompts to install the required software. You may be prompted multiple times to install software and to restart your computer.
- Click Next.
- To have the program installed to the default location, click Next.
- Click Typical.
- Click Next.
- Click Install.
- If prompted by a user account control window, click Yes.
- When the installation is complete, click Finish.
- Restart your computer.
- If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
- If you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart your computer.
- Acquire the dsm file
- If you are a new Spectrum Protect user or want a fresh copy of the dsm.opt file, please email Michael Ganoe (mganoe@vt.edu) and a copy will be emailed to you.
- Open the dsm.opt file in Notepad.
- Click Start.
- Type: notepad.
- As you type, results will appear and change. Click Notepad.
- From the File drop-down, click Open....
- To view all files, from the Text Documents (*.txt) drop-down, click All Files.
- Click the dsm.opt file you saved earlier.
- Click Open.
- Edit the dsm.opt file.
- At the top of the file (line 1), after NODENAME, replace xxxx.vt.edu with the nodename assigned to you.
Example: NODENAME domain.vt.edu
- On line 3, replace canoe.cc.vt.edu with yacht.cc.vt.edu
- Save and close the file.
- From the File drop-down, click Save.
- Close all windows.
- Move the dsm.opt file to the appropriate location.
- In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, navigate to the ABC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient folder where ABC is the letter of the drive where TSM was installed.
- To move the dsm.opt file to the baclient folder, drag dsm.opt to the baclient folder window.
- When prompted to provide administrator permission, click Continue.
- Start Backup-Archive GUI.
- Click Start.
- Type: backup.
- As you type, results will appear and change. Click Backup-Archive GUI.
- Confirm running the program.
- In the user account control window, click Yes.
- If prompted to unblock:
- Place a check in Private networks, such as my home or work network.
- Click Allow access.
- In the Password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
- Click Login.
- Change your password.
- Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
- Click Change Password....
- In the Current password: text box, type the password assigned to you.
- In the New password: text box, type a new password.
- In the Verify password: text box, re-type the new password.
- Click Change.
- Click OK.
- Perform a test of the backup process.
- Under Backup, click Backup.
- In the left pane, double-click Local.
- In the left pane, under Local, navigate to a folder containing a small file to use as a test of the backup process.
- In the right pane, place a check in the check box corresponding to the small file. Do not place a check in any hard drive check box(es), because you are only testing the connection.
- Click Backup.
- When the backup is complete, click OK.
- Close the Backup Report window.
- Configure the backup scheduler. This step is only necessary if you have never installed Spectrum Protect on the computer before.
- Near the top of the window, click Utilities.
- Click Setup Wizard.
- Place a check in Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Install a new or additional scheduler.
- Click Next.
- Place a check in Use the Client Acceptor daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler.
- Click Next.
- In the Acceptor name text box, type: TSM Client Acceptor Daemon.
- Click Next.
- To accept the default file name, click Next.
- To accept the default port, click Next.
- In the TSM Password text box, type your password.
- Click Next.
- If not already selected, click The System account.
- Click Automatically when Windows boots.
- Click Next.
- To accept the default log file locations, click Next.
- Click Yes.
- Click Next.
- Click Apply.
- Click Finish.
- Check the schedule log to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
- In Windows Explorer or File Explorer, navigate to the ABC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient where ABC is the letter of the drive where Spectrum Protect was installed.
- Double-click dsmsched.log.
- Look at the text to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
- Close the log file window. Installation is complete. Backup will run at the scheduled time between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
- If you have to turn your machine off overnight, notify the Spectrum Protect admins by contacting 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
- Notify the Spectrum Protect admins of the DNS name of the computer and the name of the computer's owner by contacting 4Help by clicking Get Help on the 4Help portal.
- Set up open file support to back up locked files (such as archived PST files).
- In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, click Utilities.
- Click Setup Wizard.
- Place a check in Help me configure Open File Support.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Volume Shadowcopy Services (VSS).
- Click Next.
- Click Apply.
- Click Finish.
- In the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window, click File.
- Click Exit.
- Restart your computer.
