Accessing Exchange Email Account after Leaving Virginia Tech

Article Description

This article explains what will happen to a user's Microsoft 365 account, which includes their Exchange Online account, when they leave or retire from Virginia Tech.

You will not have access to your Microsoft 365/Exchange Online account once you are not actively affiliated with Virginia Tech. This occurs about 15 days after you receive your final paycheck from VT. Within the 15-day "grace period" you will receive 3 notifications that your Exchange account will be expiring.

If you are, or become, an alumni or retiree, however, then you have access to an email account through VT Google Workspace for Education Mail. Incoming mail is automatically routed to this account once your affiliation changes. Existing Exchange Online mail is NOT moved AND the account mailbox will be deleted, so please make arrangements ahead of time if you wish to keep any correspondence from your Exchange Online account. If you were forwarding your VT Google Workspace for Education Mail account to your Exchange account, then you will need to disable that forwarding.

If you feel that you still require access to Office products and Email, you can work with your department to become sponsored.
