Adding, Creating, and Using Email Aliases

This article describes how to add and use an email alias.


An alias is not a separate email account. Email sent to your alias will not be in a separate account; they will be in your normal email account. It can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for any changes to your alias to take affect.

  1. Go to the http://onecampus.vt.edu Web page.

  2. If the page appears dark with text overlaid, click the page to dismiss the overlaid text.

  3. If any OneCampus announcements pop-up, after reading the text, click the appropriate button to dismiss the pop-up.

  4. Near the top-right corner of the page, click the Sign In link.

  5. From the drop-down that appears, click the Sign In button.

  6. Type your credentials.

    1. In the Username text box, type your VT Username, which is the first part of your @vt.edu email address.
      (If you do not know your VT Username, follow the instructions at Forgot VT Username.)

    2. In the Password text box, type your VT Username passphrase.
      (If you forgot your passphrase, follow the instructions at Reset VT Username (PID) Passphrase.)

    3. Click the Login button.

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor. 

  7. To the right of the OneCampus logo, in the What would you like to do? search box, type: account

  8. On the keyboard, press the Enter or Return key.

  9. Click the Manage Accounts task icon.

  10. In the E-mail Accounts section, to the right of VT G Suite e-mail, click the Change Settings link.

  11. Under E-mail addresses, click the Add alias button.

  12. In the E-mail Alias text box, type the alias you want to add.

  13. Click the Save alias button.

  14. You will now receive email messages sent to the alias.

  15. To be able to send email from the alias, follow the instructions at Send email from a different address or alias.

  16. To make the new alias your default, preferred, and displayed email address, follow the instructions in Setting Preferred Displayed Email Address.
