Use VT Personal Digital Certificate (PDC) to encrypt email in Outlook 2016 on Windows


  1. Your PDC must be imported into the Windows Certificate store. This only needs to be done once while your PDC is valid. If you have not imported your PDC into the Windows Certificate store do so by following the instructions in the KB titled “How do I import a PDC into the Windows Certificate store?” Otherwise go to step 2.
  2. Outlook must be set up to use the PDC from step 1. This only needs to be done once while your PDC is valid. If you have not setup Outlook to use digital certificates do so by using the instructions in the KB titled “How do I setup Outlook 2016 to use a Personal Digital Certificate (PDC)?” Otherwise go to step 3.
  3. In Outlook, click File.
  4. Click Options.

  5. Click on Trust Center.

  6. Click on Trust Center Settings....

  7. Click on Email Security.

  8. Check the box that says “Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages.”
  9. If you are using an Exchange account, any email sent while the encrypt box is checked, to another user with a valid PDC will be encrypted.
