Introduction
As a part of your M365 student services, you have 5 slots available with your student account, each of which can have a 1 gigabyte (GB) team assigned to it. This article describes how this student benefit works. This feature is being rolled out during the day on Aug. 29. If you do not see it, please check back later.
Instructions
Each student account has 5 slots available as long as they don’t also have employee services. A student who has employee services or affiliations is not eligible to claim a team.
How to view the teams you’ve already claimed
- Go to MyCAT.
- Scroll down and expand the M365 section.
- Look at or expand the Teams section. This shows all the teams that you are a member or owner of.
- Click on the column header, Claim Status. This will sort the statuses for easier viewing. The teams with the Release button visible have been claimed by you.
How to view the teams for claiming or releasing

- Go to MyCAT.
- Scroll down and expand the M365 section.
- Look at or expand the Teams section. This shows all the teams that you are a member or owner of.
For claiming and releasing, the column to pay attention to is the Claim Status column. There are 5 different values for this column.
- Claimed (OU: <ou name>): This team has been claimed by a department associated with the organizational unit (OU) <ou name>. It cannot be claimed by a student.
- Claimed (User: <user name>): This team has been claimed by a student. They would need to release it for you to claim it.
- Claim: This team is eligible to be claimed by you.
- Release: This team has been claimed by you.
- “-“: There is an issue with this team preventing it from being claimed including, but not limited to, you not having any slots available to claim additional teams.
How to create a new team using one of your open slots
If you have an open slot, you can create a new 1 GB team in MyCAT, and it will be assigned to one of your open slots. You will retain this claim in one of your slots even if you are no longer an owner or member of the team. You cannot increase the storage for a student team.
Steps to request:
- Go to MyCAT.
- Scroll down and expand the M365 section.
- Look at or expand the Teams section
- Click Create Team. If you do not see this button, you do not have any available slots to create a new team. You will need to release an existing team to create a new one in this case. If you need to preserve the information in the existing team, make sure that you have another student claim it in one of their slots or it will eventually be deleted.
- Enter a name and description, both are required.
- Click Create. Once created, you may see that your expanded tabs collapse again. If you would like to see the team, simply expand the Teams section again.
How to request an existing, unclaimed team be assigned to one of your slots
If you have an open slot, you can assign an existing, unclaimed team to it through MyCAT. You must be an owner of the team.
If the team has been previously locked or hidden, the files and channels will be restored once claimed, but if the team’s storage exceeds the 1 GB limit, it will be restored in a read-only state until you get the storage beneath the limit. You cannot increase the storage for a student team.
Steps to request:
- Go to MyCAT.
- Scroll down and expand the M365 section.
- Look at or expand the Teams section
- Find the team. You can sort the columns by clicking on a column header and/or move through your teams using the Next and Previous buttons.
- Click the Claim button. A Claim button will only appear if the team can be claimed and you have slots available.
