Paying for Printing

  1. Set up printing on macOS or Windows (instructions below).
  2. Print your document from your laptop. It will appear as a "job" on the printer. 
  3. Go to the printer and swipe your HokiePassport on the card reader. The printer will identify you and the funds on your Hokie Passport. 
  4. Tap Print Release. You'll see a list of print jobs named for the document sent to print. 
  5. Tap the job you want to print. The job details and cost will appear. 
    • To view available funds on your Hokie Passport, tap the Account button. 
  6. Tap Print
  7. When you're done printing, tap the Home (house) icon at the top left of the screen. 
  8. Tap Sign Out

Setting up Printing on macOS

Download print driver

  1. Download and install the latest HP Printer Drivers for macOS from Apple: 

Add printer

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click the [+].
  4. Select IP.
  5. Enter:
    • Address: tau.its.vt.edu
    • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    • Queue: <queue name from table above>
    • Name: <whatever you want to call it>
  6. For Use:
    1. Select Software...
    2. Type "775" or "575" or "cp40" in the filter box depending on the printer driver from the table.
    3. Select the appropriate driver.
    4. Click OK.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Wait a minute while the printer is added. 
  9. Click OK.

Setting up Printing on Windows 10

Download print driver

  1. Download and install the latest HP Universal Print Driver for Windows from HP: 
  2. When installing, use the USB mode- Plug and Play Installation Mode to simplify the install.

Add printer

  1. Open Devices and Printers.
  2. Select Add a printer.
  3. When the dialog comes up, select The printer that I want isn't listed at the bottom of the window.
  4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  5. Set the following options:
    • Device type: TCP/IP Device
    • Hostname: tau.its.vt.edu
  6. Uncheck Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select Custom then click Settings...
  9. Select LPR under Protocol.
  10. Enter the following under LPR Settings:
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Select HP under Manufacturer.
  14. Select HP Universal Printing PCL 6 or HP Universal Printing PS under Printers.
  15. Click Next.
  16. If asked, select Use the driver that is currently installed and click Next.
  17. Enter a name for the printer. This can be whatever you want to call it.
  18. Click Next.
  19. Wait a minute while the printer is added. 
  20. Click Finish.

To enable color printing:

  1. Right-click on the printer and choose Printer Properties.
  2. Select the Device Settings tab.
  3. Near the bottom of the list, set Device Type to Color.
  4. Click OK.

To enable duplex printing:

  1. Right-click on the printer and choose Printer Properties.
  2. Select the Device Settings tab.
  3. Near the bottom of the list, set Duplex Unit (for 2-side printing) to Installed.
  4. Click OK.
