You can apply a sensitivity label manually, or sometimes it may be applied automatically based on Virginia Tech’s detection policies.

If you are changing from a more restrictive label to a less restrictive one, Microsoft may prompt you to provide a justification.
Set/change a label in Microsoft Office apps (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
- Open the document.
- Find Sensitivity on the ribbon, often under the Home tab.
- Select the appropriate label.
- Save your changes.
Set/change a label in Google Workspace apps (Docs/Sheets/Slides)
- Open your Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file.
- Look for the sensitivity label indicator, which may appear at the top of your document or in the file menu.
- Click the label indicator and select the desired classification from the available options.
Set/change a label in Outlook (email)
- Open the email message or create a new one.
- Choose Sensitivity on the message toolbar or ribbon.
- Select the correct label before sending.
