How do I Set or Change a Sensitivity Label?


Introduction

You can apply a sensitivity label manually, or sometimes it may be applied automatically based on Virginia Tech’s detection policies.

Instructions

If you are changing from a more restrictive label to a less restrictive one, Microsoft may prompt you to provide a justification.

Set/change a label in Microsoft Office apps (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)

  1. Open the document.
  2. Find Sensitivity on the ribbon, often under the Home tab.
  3. Select the appropriate label.
  4. Save your changes.

Set/change a label in Google Workspace apps (Docs/Sheets/Slides)

  1. Open your Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file.
  2. Look for the sensitivity label indicator, which may appear at the top of your document or in the file menu.
  3. Click the label indicator and select the desired classification from the available options.

Set/change a label in Outlook (email)

  1. Open the email message or create a new one.
  2. Choose Sensitivity on the message toolbar or ribbon.
  3. Select the correct label before sending.
