Enabling Wi-Fi Calling for Smart Devices

What is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi calling is a feature on smart devices that allows you to make or receive phone calls with only a W-Fi connection rather than using cellular data. See below for different carrier guides on this service.

How to Enable Wi-Fi Calling

Before enabling Wi-Fi calling, follow the procedures here to connect your device to eduroam (VT wireless).

For iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Cellular

  3. Go to Wi-Fi Calling

  4. Be sure to review your carrier’s information on emergency calling, then tap on the button next to “Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone”
  5. Tap Enable

  6. Enter you emergency address
  7. Read the message about 911 calls over Wi-Fi and the terms and conditions. Agree and continue.

  8. Wi-Fi calling is now enabled on your device. A new button to update your emergency address will appear below. Make sure to update this whenever needed.

For Android:

  1. Open the phone app.
  2. Tap More And thenSettings.
  3. Tap Calls (or Network & Internet)
  4. Tap Wi-Fi calling. If you don’t see this option, it’s because your carrier or device doesn’t support this feature.
  5. Choose to enable/disable Wi-Fi calling on this screen.
  6. Enter your  emergency address location per the instructions that will appear on the screen.
  7. Once you’ve set up Wi-Fi calling, you can make a call over Wi-Fi just like any other call. When you are connected to the internet, you’ll see "Internet Call" or "Wi-Fi calling" on the notification screen. When you are not connected to Wi-Fi, your calls will use your mobile carrier, if you have one.
