Introduction
This article describes the use of YouTube at Virginia Tech, why embedding videos may require a Virginia Tech Google account sign-in, and a best practice for digital media delivery.
Explanation
YouTube is not a core Google Workspace service, and Virginia Tech does not have a signed agreement for its usage by our users. Therefore, creating channels and posting content for end-user consumption may be out of compliance.
Using YouTube content may require sign in.
Google frequently and without warning updates their services to prevent abuse and misuse (e.g., bots, ad insertion, unauthorized downloads), support their commercial endeavors (e.g., advertisement revenue), and fulfill legal obligations (e.g., age and/or geographic restrictions). According to the YouTube support article, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3037019, sign-in may be required to prevent downloads and other abuses. Virginia Tech has no control over this.
Virginia Tech does not "allow list" as a method to bypass Google’s (or any other third-party's) enforcement of its policies and restrictions.
Use approved content management systems or collaborative space
To ensure legal compliance and avoid issues beyond our control with third-party applications and services such as YouTube, we recommend using an approved digital media space or service that we can manage. Examples can include Kaltura, Canvas, Teams, shared drives, and Microsoft Stream. The Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies group (TLOS) is an excellent resource to get you started.
