Virginia Tech continues work to make the VT Username a more flexible and independent logon credential. Since many online services require the VT Username as the key to your record for that service, changing the VT Username should be considered carefully. Changing a VT Username can create considerable hardship for the individual requesting it, as well as possible loss of access to one or more services the individual uses. Therefore, VT Usernames normally will not be changed. Complications that may arise from changing your VT Username include:

Alternatives to changing your VT Username
The VT Username with its associated passphrase is your logon credential. Although [VT Username]@vt.edu is the basic name of your email account, it does not need to be the email address that you share with correspondents and display in directories such as VT PeopleSearch.
You may use an email alias for both VT Google Apps Mail and Exchange accounts.
You may also control the visibility of your VT Username and email addresses. For more information, see:
Note: Faculty and Staff cannot suppress their email address in VT PeopleSearch, but they may choose their preferred email address to display.
