Clearing out the autocomplete entry for an email address in Outlook

Introduction

This article describes how to remove the autocomplete entry for an email in Outlook. This can sometimes resolve the following error when sending an email:

Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: [Name] [email address] The email address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

Instructions

When sending an email, Outlook saves information about the recipient to help you quickly type the recipient's information again later. This feature is called autocomplete. The saved information will appear as you start typing the name or email of the recipient in the To text box.

Problems with autocomplete can be caused when the recipient changes their email service, i.e., from Google to Exchange or vice versa. In this case, the saved information is no longer valid. However, since the auto complete function is reset based only on what you type, it never picks up the change.

To clear the autocomplete information for a contact:

  1. In Outlook, click New message.

  2. In the To text box, start typing the name or email address of the recipient.

  3. Wait for the autocomplete entry to appear.
  4. Click X next to the autocomplete entry.

  5. In the To text box, type the entire email address, again, so that Outlook will request and save updated information from the Exchange Server.

If you have this problem with many recipients, to clear autocomplete for all of your Outlook contacts, follow the instructions at Clearing a Cached Email Address in Outlook for Windows.
