Routing and Forwarding Virginia Tech Email

This article explains how to automatically route or forward Gmail or Exchange Online email messages to another account or email address. For an understanding of the configuration options available, please see the Knowledge Base article, VT Routing versus Forwarding Options.

Set the Routing for Email

  1. Navigate to OneCampus.
    1. If the page appears dark with text overlaid, click the page to dismiss the overlaid text.
    2. If any OneCampus announcements pop-up, after reading the text, click the appropriate button to dismiss the pop-up.
    3. To the right of the OneCampus logo, in the What would you like to do? search box, type: "admin"

    4. Press the Enter or Return key.
    5. Click the ADadmin task icon.

    6. Log on with your Hokies ID (which is the same as your VT Username) and Hokies ID passphrase. If you have forgotten your password, follow the instructions at Change or Reset Hokies Password via Account Manager.
    7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
  2. In the left menu column, select Messaging / Collaboration.

  3. Under Messaging / Collaboration, click the View / Edit Exchange Mailbox link.
    1. If View/Edit Exchange Mailboxes is inaccessible, contact your OU admin by following the instructions at Finding Your Organizational Unit (OU) and OU Administrator.)

  4. To the right of I want my primary mailbox to be: from the drop-down list, set your preference by selecting Exchange or Google.
    1. You only have this option if you have both an Exchange Online and a Gmail account. If you only have a Gmail account, and wish to get an Exchange Online account, you must be sponsored.

Forward Email from Exchange Online to Gmail

  1. Set Google as the primary mailbox.

    1. Log in to OneCampus.

      1. If the page appears dark with text overlaid, click the page to dismiss the overlaid text.
      2. If any OneCampus announcements pop-up, after reading the text, click the appropriate button to dismiss the pop-up.
      3. To the right of the OneCampus logo, in the What would you like to do? search box, type: admin

      4. On the keyboard, press the Enter or Return key.
      5. Click the ADAdmin task icon.

      6. If prompted, log on with your Hokies ID (which is the same as your VT Username) and Hokies ID (Exchange) password. If you have forgotten your password, follow the instructions at Change or Reset Hokies Password via Account Manager.

      7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete authentication with your second factor.
    2. In the left menu column, select Messaging / Collaboration.
    3. Under Messaging / Collaboration, click the View / Edit Exchange Mailbox link.
      (If View/Edit Exchange Mailboxes is inaccessible, contact your OU admin by following the instructions at Finding Your Organizational Unit (OU) and OU Administrator.)

    4. To the right of I want my primary mailbox to be: select Google.
  2. Set up the forward in the Microsoft 365 Mail App.

    1. Log on to the Microsoft 365 Mail App by following the instructions at Microsoft 365 Mail App (Exchange Online with a Web Browser).
    2. In the top-right corner of the window, to the left of your profile picture, click the settings icon (which is represented by a gear).

    3. In the right pane that appears, at the bottom, click the View all Outlook settings link.

    4. Be sure you are in the Mail tab and click the Forwarding link in the middle pane.

    5. Place a check in the Enable forwarding check box.

    6. In the Forward my email to: text box, type: ABC@g.mail.vt.edu but replace ABC with your VT Username.

    7. Place a check in the Keep a copy of forwarded messages check box.

  3. At the bottom right of the window, click the Save button.
