Zip Files – How to Zip or Unzip a File or Folder


Question: How do I zip (compress) and unzip (decompress) files on Windows and Mac OS?


Instructions: To zip (compress) a file or folder:

Mac OS Instructions:

  1. Control-click the file or folder and choose Compress > filename.

Windows PC Instructions:

  1. Right-click the file or folder and choose Send To > Compressed Folder.

Instructions: To unzip (decompress) a file or folder:

Mac OS Instructions:

  1. To unzip (decompress) a file or folder on a Mac, double-click it.

Windows PC Instructions:

  1. If you are using Windows 2000 or earlier, you need software such as WinZip or StuffIt.

  2. To open a zipped file, drag the .ZIP attachment to the desktop.

    • Once the file is on the desktop, you can double- or right-click to open it.

  3. Double-click the zipped file to see its contents.

  4. When prompted, drag the files out of the window to the desired location or click Extract All.

    • When you click Extract All, the files are unzipped in the same location as the original file, unless you specify a different one in the Select a Destination window.

  5. Right-click the zipped file and select Extract All.

    • By default, files are extracted to the same location as the original zipped file.

  6. Use the Select a Destination window to save the files somewhere else.
