Troubleshooting file access through the downloaded apps in Microsoft 365


Introduction

This article describes a potential solution when a correctly licensed individual is able to access files through Microsoft Office applications on the web, but not through the downloaded applications. 

Instructions

  1. Ensure that you are correctly licensed through MyCAT. Students and most employees at Virginia Tech are licensed for both the browser and desktop applications. Students should see "M365 A5" Student under the Licenses section of MyCAT. Employees who are licensed for desktop applications will see "M365 A5".
  2. Sign Out of All Microsoft Office Apps on the device. Do this across all Office desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    1. Open an Office application.
    2. Click your profile icon (top-right corner).
    3. Click Sign out.
    4. Repeat for other apps (Word, Outlook, etc.).
  3. Clear Cached Credentials in Windows. 
    1. Windows Credential Manager cleanup:
    2. Open Credential Manager (Start > Search > "Credential Manager").
    3. Go to Windows Credentials.
    4. Remove anything that says:
      1. MicrosoftOffice
      2. OneDrive Cached Credential
      3. microsoftonline.com
  4. Go to Settings > Accounts >Access work or school (press the Windows button + I)
  5. Delete your account there.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Re-Sign into Microsoft 365
