Why am I being asked to set up Duo (Cisco Duo Secure) again?

Introduction

This article describes a situation where you may be asked to set up Duo (Cisco Duo Secure) just after authenticating. This will happen only when you are trying to access certain Microsoft services or profile pages (e.g., Azure Portal or the Microsoft Security Info profile page). This does NOT affect your M365 Office applications (Word, Outlook, etc.).

Explanation

Our authentication method policies were not being enforced as intended, which created an extra security feature affecting some Microsoft services and profile pages. Examples include

If you experienced a request to complete your two-factor with a Microsoft-based Authentication method immediately after authenticating with Duo when accessing certain Microsoft services or profile pages, then you have experienced the duplicate security feature.

We corrected the issue and removed the duplicate security feature. However, those Microsoft services and profile pages will now need to be associated with Duo (instead of the Microsoft authentication method) to access them. Therefore, you are receiving prompts to help you set up Duo for these specific items. Please continue with the prompts. You will only need to do this once for each affected item.
