Explanation
Audio calls from a direct message to its members in Slack
The Virginia Tech Slack Workspace uses Zoom for this method.
- Open a direct message (DM) and click the member's name(s) in the conversation header.
- Below the member's name(s), select Start a Call.
- Your call will start right away and the member(s) you're calling will see a prompt to join the call.

Audio calls from a direct message to a specific member's phone
This will require that you have software set up to make phone calls from Slack and they have a phone number associated with their profile information.
- Open a DM and click the member's name in the conversation header.
- Click the About tab.
- Click the number next to the phone icon.

Audio calls from a channel to its members in Slack
The Virginia Tech Slack Workspace uses Zoom for this method.
- Open a channel and click the channel name in the conversation header.
- Below the channel name, select Start a Call.

Slack Huddles
Slack Huddles are lightweight calling mechanisms in Slack that are intended for impromptu audio calls. Video is not available in a Slack Huddle. You can start a Huddle from within a channel or DM. The call does not use Zoom.
- From within a channel or DM, click on the Start Huddle icon in the lower left corner.
